Journal clubs are a pivotal component of graduate education in the biomedical sciences. Unlike didactic courses, journal club focuses on recently published papers in a variety of disciplines and involves the thorough evaluation of all aspects of these papers. Ideally, this introduces students to new experimental approaches and research areas and trains them how to critically evaluate and understand scientific literature. Since students will themselves likely produce manuscripts of their own, it is vital that they know what elements make for a strong primary research publication.
The course CELL 5960 Current Topics in Cell Biology (Journal Club) surveys current literature that highlights the most widely used techniques, protocols, assays, and technologies used in biomedical research. Students learn the scientific jargon, basic biology, and theories associated with experimental design. Spring 2021 Journal Club is held on Tuesdays from 3:00 – 3:50 PM by zoom.
The next journal club article "FYN–TRAF3IP2 induces NF-κB signaling-driven peripheral T-cell lymphoma" will be presented by John Woods from Dr. Olson’s Lab on April 27th 2021.
