Research Interests:

Our multidisciplinary neuroscience laboratory uses a variety of research tools to understand the modulation of brain systems, particularly sensory systems, by hormones and/or the immune system. Hormones can alter our perception of the world and how we react to stimuli. In addition, our immune system is intimately associated with the nervous system and can either facilitate or inhibit neural systems. Our past research interests have involved the effects of the gonadotropin releasing hormone system on the chemosensory systems. We have also studied how the brain processes pheromone information. Our latest research focuses on how the production of antibodies to certain neurotransmitter receptors can affect the olfactory system. This research is being conducted with the use of neuroanatomical, molecular biological, electrophysiological and behavioral techniques. We use many vertebrate species in order to develop generalizable concepts. Our research has been funded by the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine Alumni Association, Oklahoma Center for the Advancement of Science and Technology, the Presbyterian Health Foundation, the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation.
