Research Interests:

Dr. Weigel's research program focused on the synthesis of hyaluronan, a polysaccharide that plays key roles in development, cancer and wound healing.  Hyaluronan turns over at the rate of grams per day, and disruption of either the steady state amount or the polymer length can result in severe pathology.  Dr. Weigel's primary R01 to investigate these mechanisms, was funded for 26 years, until 2013.  In addition, he had many other grants, from NIH and other sources, all through his time as Chair.  Dr. Weigel brought into OUHSC over $10.5 million in grant funding ($7,899,557 in Direct costs).  He published 192 peer-reviewed papers, review articles and book chapters.  To date he holds 62 patents. Dr. Weigel served as Biochemistry & Molecular Biology from 1994 through 2015. He was awarded the George Lynn Cross Research Professorship and held the department's Ed Miller Endowed Chair in Molecular Biology.
